Thanks to one of our general bio students, Andrea Lozano, majoring in Journalism, for showcasing the garden and our efforts in the SBVC's newspaper, the Arrowhead News. Link to the article.

From SBVC biology grad to scientific powerhouse! David Canseco landed elite research internships at both the California Academy of Sciences and the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum. Now he's taking his passion for Evolutionary Biology, Biodiversity, and Traditional Knowledge to graduate school.

News!
Construction in the Garden is almost done!
We'd like to announce that the garden has been going through some forced remodeling since Spring'22 given the location of the brand new Technical building. The remodeling has created more walking paths for visitors to enjoy and a special plant propagating site to grow our own native plants.
This coming academic year, we'll be working on expanding our interpretive signage and so much more as we get ready for this year's La Niña climate patterns (very dry conditions)!

Spring'24 Weed Removal
It was a bit tedious to remove so many aster invasive weeds. Now, we can see much better the plants of our desert zones. We'll keep an eye on the fruiting bodies of our cacti too!

Upcoming Bee Hotel Installation
To support native solitary bees, we're installing egg-laying habitats alongside existing leaf litter and flowering host plants.

Massive Fall Weed Cleaning
With the summer break, many weeds got ahead of us. Our garden clean up event was attended by faculty and students! A special thank you to Micah Martin, Spanish Language faculty and his students for helping out.

Fall Planting
This October-December we are scheduling a few events to plant more native California plants while also planning our first plant sale in Spring 2025.
Past & Current Events

Recent Events

Dr. Dani Graham (Psych. Prof.) and the botanical gardens curators coordinated a celebration of Earth Day by conducting a tour of the Oak Garden to acknowledge the importance of nature in everyone' physical and mental health and integrating the healing stories of our indigenous people. The event was a guided tour of some of the California and Mediterranean plants maintained at the Oak Garden. We were also accompanied with much knowledge from Mary Valdemar, cofounder of Chicano Indigenous Community for Culturally Conscious Advocacy & Action and her team and Dr. Arlee Montalvo, SB-Riv Chapter President of the Calif. Native Plant Society.
